Roller Skating Trivia

  • Roller skates have been used for recreation since the 1700’s, but they first appeared as part of a theatrical performance! According to The History of Roller Skating, the original inventor is unknown, but by 1819 M. Pettibled patented the first official pair in France.
  • For the most part, roller skates are recreational; however, they have made their mark on a number of industries. Roller skating waitresses and carhops were a particularly 1950’s phenomenon, but you can find roller skates being used in business even before that. According to AT&T, their switchboard supervisors used to wear roller skates in order to get around the huge rooms quickly and assist the operators.
  • A group of skating rink owners got together before World War II and formed an industry association to promote themselves. That association is still active today- The Roller Skating Rink Operators Association. It has been 50 years and much has changed, but roller skating is a classic activity that seems immune to time.
  • InterSkate attracts skaters from all over north Texas, including Carrollton, Flower Mound, Denton, Frisco, Farmers Branch, and Dallas.
